Assessment of a segregated medicated early weaning protocol for elimination of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae Ciência Rural
Tamiozzo,Pablo Jesús; Carranza,Alicia Isabel; Pelliza,Bibiana Rosa; Parada,Julián; Ambrogi,Arnaldo.
ABSTRACT: To assess the success of a segregated medicated early weaning protocol for elimination of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, ten consecutive batches of 100 pigs per batch weaned at 7-9 days of age were monitored at 21-22 weeks of age looking for presence of productive cough, presence of antibodies against the agent and pleuropneumonia-compatible lung lesions at slaughter. Also, whole tonsils were processed for A. pleuropneumoniae identification by both bacteriological isolation and nested-PCR using a direct method. Positive serological test (1.4%) and PCR (3.5%) results, suggested that A. pleuropneumoniae could not be eradicated in all batches, even using segregated medicated early weaning protocol.

Metal subcellular partitioning determines excretion pathways and sensitivity to cadmium toxicity in two marine fish species. ArchiMer
Le Croizier, Gael; Lacroix, Camille; Artigaud, Sebastien; Le Floch, Stephane; Munaron, Jean-marie; Raffray, Jean; Penicaud, Virginie; Rouget, Marie-laure; Lae, Raymond; Tito De Morais, Luis.
Subcellular cadmium (Cd) partitioning was investigated in the liver of two marine fish species, the European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax and the Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis, dietary exposed to an environmentally realistic Cd dose for two months followed by a two-month depuration. Cd exposure did not modify Cd cellular partitioning for either species, refuting the spillover hypothesis. Both species contained most of the Cd in the detoxifying fraction but displayed different handling strategies. Cd was largely bound to heat stable proteins (HSP) including metallothioneins (MT) in sea bass while Cd was more linked to metal rich granules (MRG) in sole. Whole liver concentrations and subcellular partitioning were also determined for essential elements....

Misconceptions and false expectations in neutral evolution Biol. Res.
VALENZUELA,CARLOS Y..
Neutral evolution results from random recurrent mutation and genetic drift. A small part of random evolution, that which is related to protein or DNA polymorphisms, is the subject of the Neutral Theory of Evolution. One of the foundations of this theory is the demonstration that the mutation rate (m) is equal to the substitution rate. Since both rates are independent of population size, they are independent of drift, which is dependent upon population size. Neutralists have erroneously equated the substitution rate with the fixation rate, despite the fact that they are antithetical conceptions. The neutralists then applied the random walk stochastic model to justify alleles or bases that were fixated or eliminated. In this model, once the allele or base...

Selective elimination of chloroplastidial DNA for metagenomics of bacteria associated with the green alga Caulerpa Taxifolia (bryopsidophyceae) ArchiMer
Aires, Tania; Marba, Nuria; Serrao, Ester A.; Duarte, Carlos M.; Arnaud-haond, Sophie.
Molecular analyses of bacteria associated with photosynthetic organisms are often confounded by coamplification of the chloroplastidial 16S rDNA with the targeted bacterial 16S rDNA. This major problem has hampered progress in the characterization of bacterial communities associated to photosynthetic organisms and has limited the full realization of the potential offered by the last generation of metagenomics approaches. A simple and inexpensive method is presented, based on ethanol and bleach treatments prior to extraction, to efficiently discard a great part of chloroplastidial DNA without affecting the characterization of bacterial communities through pyrosequencing. Its effectiveness for the description of bacterial lineages associated to the green...

SENSORY ASPECTS AND REDUCTION OF Salmonella IN IRRADIATED EGG POWDER Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Froehlich,Ângela; Franco,Bernadette Dora Gombossy de Melo; Destro,Maria Teresa; Landgraf,Mariza.
ABSTRACTEggs and their products have been implicated in food-borne disease outbreaks due to contamination with SalmonellaEnteritidis. Irradiation, as a food preservation technology, could minimize such contamination. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of irradiation in powdered egg yolk, egg white, and whole egg samples spiked with Salmonella Enteritidis. The powdered egg samples were exposed to doses of 0.5, 1.0, 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, or 4.0 kGy irradiation. Odors and tastes of raw and cooked non-inoculated, irradiated samples, and non-irradiated samples, were analyzed by a trained panel. A dose of 2.0 kGy resulted in slight to moderate changes in powdered egg yolk samples, compared to non-irradiated controls, while minimal differences...
